What if listening is our most radical data design tool? In this keynote, data artist Tiziana Alocci reflects on the act of listening as a way of intervening in or interacting with the world—an approach that transforms data into poetic soundscapes and makes the invisible visible. From her immersive installation Frequencies of Belonging dominating the port of Genoa to the bespoke soundscape created for Gucci, Alocci explores how sound, memory, and space can shape new forms of storytelling, even when data-driven. Guided by the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard and the poetics of space, she shares how numbers can become sound, sound can become image, and listening can become a new way of seeing.

Presenting data to patients and stakeholders without scientific backgrounds requires careful consideration of how we visualise information to ensure it's truly accessible and understandable. Creating clear charts involves several key factors, including decluttering your visuals, choosing accessible color palettes, and selecting appropriate fonts that enhance readability. In this talk, I'll demonstrate how to effectively combine these design elements to produce charts that communicate clearly with any audience.

In museums, colonial legacies manifest in fragmented narratives that marginalise cultures and individuals from formerly colonised territories. The data resulting from these narratives is shaped and processed by museums’ knowledge systems, which often follow the same logic that governs neoliberal practices such as data colonialism. This talk will discuss pathways for data care through decolonial strategies employed by museums, digital humanities, and artistic initiatives. These approaches seek to surface biases and gaps, repair historical injustices, and shift power dynamics helping marginalised communities reclaim ownership and agency over their data.

About the Organisers
MA Design for Data Visualisation at LCC
We're a forward-thinking postgraduate programme exploring how design can make data more accessible, ethical, and impactful. Our students come from diverse backgrounds - design, journalism, sciences, and beyond - united by a passion for responsible data storytelling.
The programme combines rigorous design practice with critical theory, examining not just how to visualise data, but why, for whom, and with what consequences. Our students work on real-world projects that tackle social issues, environmental challenges, and questions of representation in data.
